Patient with 4 broken front teeth and an underbite. We opened the bite with posterior crowns, did crown lengthening on the front 4 teeth to obtain enough tooth axial wall length and to make the gumline as even as possible. We placed crowns on the front teeth for an improved smile. Our material of choice was lava for its strength (zirconia) and esthetics (feldspathic porcelain).

Patient with a 100% overbite causing severe wear of the inside surfaces of the upper front teeth and facial surfaces of the lower front teeth. Teeth grinding caused wear of the chewing surfaces of the posterior teeth.
Patient also has a gummy smile.
Solution:  We opened the bite with Lava crowns on posterior teeth reducing overbite to 60%, giving us enough space to restore upper and lower front teeth with lava crowns.  We also recontoured gingival tissue to reduce gingival display when smiling.  My material of choice was Lava for its strength (zirconia) & beauty
(feldspathic porcelain).

Menopause and Periodontal Disease

A new study published in Menopause, the journal of North American Menopause Society (NAMS) has found the same estrogen therapy used to treat osteoporosis may be effective in reducing periodontal diseases in post-menopausal women. Of the 492 post-menopausal Brazilian women in the study, 113 received a treatment of systematic estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin, as well as calcium and vitamin D supplements for a 6-month period. The study reported the rate of occurrence of severe #periodontitis was 44% lower in the study’s osteoporosis-treatment group than those in the untreated group. The decline in estrogen levels during #menopause causes loss of bone mineral density which can result in #osteoporosis and affect the jaw, leading to an increased risk of periodontal diseases, according to NAMS.

What does a dental hygienist do for me?

What does a dental hygienist do for me?
A dental hygienist cleans your teeth, examines and educates dental patients on oral disease.
A regular schedule with the dental hygienist is a great way to " catch things" before they go bad.

Soda and your teeth

Do you like drinking Soda? Here are some tips to help you prevent damage to your teeth if you cant stop your soda addiction.

  • Try different drinks: try beverages containing less sugar such as water, milk and 100 percent fruit juice.
  • Rinse with water: After drinking soda , rinse your mouth with water to remove vestiges of the drink that can prolong exposure of tooth enamel to acids.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse: Fluoride reduces cavities and strengthens tooth enamel, so brush with a fluoride-containing toothpaste such as Colgate® Total®. Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash also can help.
  • Get professionally applied fluoride treatment: Your dental hygienist can apply fluoride in the form of a foam, gel or rinse.
Soft drinks are hard on your teeth. By reducing the amount you drink, practicing good oral hygiene, and seeking help from your dentist and hygienist, you can counteract their effect and enjoy better oral health.

There is a direct link between the food you eat and how many cavities you get.

Cavities are caused by the interaction of bacteria and left over carbs in your mouth. The more frequently you snack, the
more you snack on, the more cavities you will get
.

Large amalgam filling with recurrent decay under the filling. In this case after the removal of decay too much tooth was missing to restore with a filling. A nice conservative option to a crown is a porcelain onlay. The end result is very natural.

What causes a cavity ?
Bacteria in your mouth thrive on leftover food on your teeth & from plaque. The acid in plaque dissolves enamel causing cavities. Overtime the cavity gets deeper and closer to the nerve (pulp) causing a toothache.

The Tooth Fairy Controversy

How much money should the tooth fairy pay for a tooth?
Calling all parents- We need your opinion- How much did the tooth fairy pay your child for a tooth? Was there a multiple tooth discount? Does it matter if the tooth had a cavity? Does the tooth fairy give coins or "big money?"(as my nephew calls it) Can your child spend tooth fairy money or does it go in the piggy bank? Does the tooth fairy give other things besides money? All important questions if you are a parent of a 6-12 yr old.
Or if you are a 6-12 yr old.
